You Should Buy: Beats Fit Pro
The best wireless ear buds for working out, at a surprisingly fair price.
Some people have a lot of shoes. Some have a million purses. Photographers often have a lot of different camera bags. Campers usually have several sleeping bags. At one point, I had a headphones problem. I’m mostly cured, but I still own four pairs. The ones I use the most, though? My Beats Fit Pro. Here’s why.
3 Big Deals
I bought the Beats Fit Pro for three main reasons:
Active Noise Canceling (ANC)
Battery life + charging case
They actually stay in my ears
ANC
Active Noise Canceling is a fantastic feature that has been around in large, over-the-ear headphones from companies like Bose and Sony for decades. The first time I ever experienced it, I used a demo at Best Buy. I put on a pair of Bose QuietComfort headphones and hit play. The music sounded pretty good. Then a prompt on the screen told me to take the headphones off for a second. I couldn’t believe my ears. A speaker was playing very loud sounds that imitated what you hear when you’re on a plane. I put the headphones back on. Nothing. Just music. I was blown away, and a few months later, I bought a pair of Bose.
That technology has only gotten better over time, and now it’s available in tiny little earbuds like the AirPods Pro and Beats Fit Pro. This is great for travelling or blocking out sounds at a cafe.
But what about when you’re walking around or biking? Well, Beats/Apple has added a feature called Transparency, where the outside sounds are piped into your headphones. This sounds insane, and it is, but it’s remarkably effective. You can still hear the important things around you, but you don’t have wind noise or other white noise that drowns out the music.
A Nice Case, with USB-C
The AirPods debuted with a gorgeous, functional charging case, and every earbud maker has since tried to copy it. The Beats Fit Pro continues this tradition - the case offers 18h of charge. The buds can run for 6h, so with both fully charged, you have 24h of power.
The case has a USB-C port for charging, unlike all AirPods cases which use Lightning. Also, unlike AirPods, the Beats come in a few colours, and their cases match.
One negative of the case is the build quality. The top flap feels very flimsy and cheap. This is unfortunate because the AirPods cases feel so solid and high quality. However, I’ve been using the case for months, throwing it in my hiking pack and laptop bag, and it’s standing up just fine so far.
The battery life is outstanding. 6h of charge at a time is a lot of battery life for such tiny devices, and it’s a perfect amount of time for their target demographic - active people who go the gym, hike, bike, run, etc.
Plus, if you need a quick charge before a workout:
If you need a little extra juice, 5-minute Fast Fuel charging gives up to 1 hour of playback when battery is low.
They Actually Stay in My Ears
Everyone’s ears are different. The original AirPods stayed in my ears for the most part, unless I was doing strenuous cardio or running fast. The AirPods Pro, on the other hand, would fall out while I was slowly walking along mowing the lawn. I bought the Beats PowerBeats wired earbuds to solve this and they worked very well. They sounded great, and they stayed in my ears, but I missed the charging case and wireless freedom. Luckily, the Beats Fit Pro came along.
The buds have little wingtips that stick into your ear and keep them in place. I’ve done hardcore cardio workouts, gone for runs, and gone mountain biking, and I’ve never dropped one.
Now, this may not be true for your ears, but the design is promising, and I encourage you to check them out if you’re finding it challenging to find earbuds that stay in your ears.
… And So Much More
While reading the product page, I had forgotten just how much is packed into these earbuds. A few standouts:
H1 chip allows you to use Hey Siri, easily switch between devices, and even share audio with other AirPods/Beats users
Beats app for Android ensures great compatibility features for Android users
Eartips with three size options
Four lovely colours
You Should Buy the Beats Fit Pro
These things sound fantastic, have excellent Active Noise Cancelling, come with a great charging case, have excellent battery life, and they stay in my ears during workouts. I can’t really ask for more out of wireless earbuds.
If you’re in the market for new earbuds, give these a look - especially if you have an active lifestyle.
